Napoli

Naples, Campania, Italy
We were up earlyish to have brekkie then head for the trek over the cobblestone streets with our luggage to catch the ferry to Salerno. This time it wasn't cancelled & we had a very pleasant trip up the coast.

After disembarking at Salerno port we found our way the short distance to the stazione, again through cobblestone streets, which are just great for the wheels on the luggage .......

Fairly uneventful train trip to Napoli, took less than an hour.

None of us were sure what to expect in Napoli, we had all been warned about its dubious reputation for being 'unsafe’ & not a real tourist city.

Walking from the stazione to our new hotel booked a few days before at almost half the price of our original one (we found out later why......the original one was just amazing, we stumbled across it in our travels) we were very very concerned. The area around the station left a lot to be desired & if not travelling with a group I would have turned around & caught a train back to Rome!!!

The hotel we were directed to looked like it was the type that rented rooms by the hour.....not overnight.

But to our great relief it was the wrong one, just had a similar name. Ours was down the road a bit, still in a very dodgy area but the hotel was fine. Big room, but smelly bathroom, think they spent the money on the décor & not the plumbing.......but sprayed some Giorgio Armani Si around the room (damn expensive air freshener) & all was good.

We set out to site see with a map & some advice from the ‘romeo’ at reception (if David is reading this, he would put Mario to shame in the flirting stakes!!! Mind you Gay loved it, hahaha.)

Napoli is a city of surprises, it has so much history & is beautiful. We all loved it & were very glad we did add it to our itinerary despite what we had been warned about. I would thoroughly recommend it.

Urs & I had spoken to an American couple on the ferry to Positano & they told us they had the best coffee (& pastries) since arriving in Italy at a café near the opera house. W set off on the metro to explore & as I had the opera house on my must see list we headed there & found the café. They were right, it was great coffee, something that is hard to find in Italy, despite it being the home of coffee.....

More sight seeing & we ended up on the right side of the harbour where all of the cafes, bars & eateries are. Of course by then it was prosecco time......

That night we ate at a little pizzeria not far from our hotel, food was really good although it was more modern than any we had chosen to date.
