Crossing the border, feet up & not leaving the van

Copán, Copán, Honduras
Time to leave Guatemala. Sorry, could not find Dr Ropata!

We left at 10 am with all of our luggage on top of the van bound for the border with Honduras and then Copan for 2 nights.

Again as we drove through Guatemala City it was windows shut and AC on. Not a nice city!

We had to virtually re-track our route into Antigua several days earlier.

Passing through fields with melons growing, road side stalls selling grapes and pineapple and after 2 toilet stops we made the border at 4 pm.

I have been through border crossings at countless locations but this one is one of the best.

Having filled in all the paper work, handed Bec the Q 10 (to leave Guatemala) and US $3 (to enter Honduras) plus passports, all we had to do was stay on board the van and wait.

In no man’s land (actually it was still in Guatemala) the money changers were there outside the van for those who wanted some Honduran Lempiras. I chose to wait for the 2 ATMs in Copan, hoped that one was working and accepted one of my currency cards. It did!

Our bags stayed on the roof of the van.

No ID check with the local border officials so anyone could have come in on our passports. Being in a tour group was the difference.

This whole procedure took some 45 minutes and thank goodness no other large groups were crossing at the same time as us.

Copan was only 10 km away so we made it as dust fell. Checked into our hotel and a quick orientation tour of what seems to be a one horse town with a central plaza and just several blocks of shops, restaurants and hotels. Somehow I did not take any pictures of the town.

Dinner that night was at Via Via. My Completo was a steak and chicken table buffet with guacamole, beans, cheese, chismol tortillas for L 170 / NZ $ 10 / US $ 8.30. I had no ideal what that was. I think that some of the other guys were envious as most got what was a burger / toasted sandwich. Presentation of all meals were great. As it was hot and humid, a 1 litre bottle of Salva Vida L 75 / NZ $ 4.40 / US $ 3.70 was certainly in order.
