Fall Celebrations in Stuttgart

Stuttgart Farmers Festival
 Landwirtschaftliches Hauptfest – Sept 30, 2006

Every 2nd year is this large "farmers Festival"… where you can see the best animals… the newest equipment and get some real yummy food – all homemade. And as a real farm girl, Gine went there as a kid often with her parents… so she had to show Paul the German way of farming….. We liked the new huge tractors.

And an even bigger event is the yearly Stuttgarter Volksfest – which is after the Oktoberfest in Munich, the 2nd largest beer festival in the world. Now even we are both not big party people, this is worth going, to see for one all the people, see some of the large horse drawn Brewery wagons, the huge beer tents… to go in and listen to the oh so German humbaba Music… wow what a turn on. Even better admiring the waitresses and waiters when the carry those large beer mugs around, watching the people drowning one of those big mugs after the other and having fun… and between enjoy some real cool German food like the BBQ chicken, bratwurst, nice German waffles…

So we had to get some big mugs and bring them home… maybe one day it will be hot enough and we can drink a full one. And we saw the “fruit column” one of the left over from the original festival??

Canstatter Volksfest Who had the idea to celebrate the Volksfest?

In 1815 a giant Volcano interruption in Indonesia brought huge amounts of dust particles in the jet stream, causing crop failure and famine in Europe.         The winter of 1815/16 was the coldest ever: snow until May – no summer, lots of rain making it impossible to have a harvest. People in Germany were starving – the little existing flour was stretched with sawdust. When Kaiser Wilhelm I became king of Wuertemberg in 1816 his brother-in-law the Russian Zar helped him by delivering grain. In 1817 when the first harvest was brought in Kaiser Wilhelm and his Russian wife Katharina had the idea to sponsor a harvest festival – which should take place every year on the king's birthday Sept 28 on the Canstatter Wasen. It was to encourage the farmers with giving them food and prices. At the same time they opened the agricultural university so King Wilhelm was called “king of the farmers”.
