Ziefalten Zwiefalten – July 30, 2006
One amazing baroque church so close to our home… that is a must see. So we stopped at the monastery, went inside and were overwhelmed with all the gold and the amazing ceiling paintings: you can look up and look forever to discover something new all the time, also amazing are the marble columns, lots of gold and white and then everywhere the white Marble figures.

We also walked a little around the town along the river.

Some interesting facts:
  • The Abbey was founded in 1089
  • The present baroque building is from 1739-47
  • The high altar has a gothic statue of the virgin Mary – from 1420

There are a lot of caves on the Swabian Alb, so we visited some of them. This one is a little bit different, because you don't walk in with a flash light, you actually take a boat, which was a lot of fun.

Right near it, is a cute restaurant right on the river and an old mill – we even found a nice walk along the river Ach.

Some interesting facts:
  • it’s the only cave in Germany you enter with a boat
  • it got first mentioned in 1447
  • overall the cave is 723 m long, but you can only go in the first 70 m, then the cave ceiling meets the water – so you would have to dive
  • At the entrance of the cave, thanking Duke Friedrich II for its visit in 1803
  • The mill is from the 11th century and was part of the monastery in Zwiefalten
  • The Mill and Castle Ehrenfels are still owned until today by the Duke of Saint-Andre – from the family of the Duke Norman
