Castle Sigmaringen Castle Sigmaringen

Some facts:
  • It was first mentioned in 1077, some of the old parts are underneath the 17th century castle: under the Hohenzollern when it went through big transformation from 1627-1630 and went from a castle to a Renaissance chateau
  • The Hohenzollern dynasty part of the Prussian
  • The castle in Hechingen was the centerpiece of the dynasty with a split into the Sigmaringen, Hechingen and Haigerloch Hohenzollerns – the Haigerloch died out in 1634, the Hechingen line died out in 1869
One thing is for sure, this is one impressive castle from the outside and the inside. One of the things that impressed us the most was the armor chamber when you see all the heavy metal. And they had some real cute carriages.

Sigmaringen - townhall Sigmaringen town
And already here, we did a walk around the old town. To the Plaza at the town hall, the garden of the prince and all around some old houses.

Memorial - Mariengedenkstaette Mariengedenkstaette Gutenberg (near Messkirch)

Driving along the Donau valley we had to stop when we found this cute "Cave" or hole in the rock: which we discovered is a Marien Memorial place. Since it had those cute steps going up we had to check it out.

Castle Wildenstein Burg Wildenstein
Built between 1200-1300, this castle is today a youth hostel, and it looks great with its white colored walls sitting on the hill above the Donau valley, from where we had a nice view over the Valley.

lunch in the donauvalley And then it's time for a coffee break.
