Hometown Twin

Celle, Lower Saxony, Germany
We set off again on a nice sunny morning for the short-ish journey to Celle. This was mainly on motorway, by-passing Braunschweig. As we got nearer to Celle we found our favourite ' 'umleitung' signs (diversion) so using the map we worked out our own way through.

Celle is twinned with my hometown of Tavistock in Devon.   Lots of my friends did 'exchanges' with young people from Celle when we were teenagers but I never did.

We found the MH Aire without too much trouble. It is situated in the huge lorry part of an enormous car park, on the banks of the R Aller, and is free to overnight. There is a machine for water and pump out. There were a lot of other MH's there but no Brits.
It was only a short walk into the town so we went for a look around. Celle is quite a 'show town' and has many many half timbered and very decorative buildings.   It suffered no bomb damage during the war so everything is original, not copied, as in many German towns and cities.

It was very hot and most of the pavement cafes were full, with interesting buskers playing. Celle has always been an affluent place with a large Schloss.
As we were wandering around it got really hot and oppressive, and large thunder clouds threatened.
We hurried back to the MH and not long after there was an enormous storm.

Given that it was right in the middle of town we had a very quiet night.

I have some reservations about Tavistock being twinned with Celle. About 12 miles up the road from the city is the site of Bergen-Belsen, one of the Nazi's most notorious concentration camps.
How on earth could the town's inhabitants not know what was on their doorstep?
Perhaps we will find out tomorrow?

My sister did the Tavistock/Celle school exchange in the 70s. I'm still in touch with the family who still live in Celle. I'm yet to visit, but I am moving back to Tavistock after many years living in Plymouth. Sending best wishes to the author.
