A dry day in Bergen!!!

Bergen, Western Fjords, Norway
When we woke up the rain had stopped nd a weak sun was breaking through. Wow!  We caught the Light railway from the stop just down the road - 18NOK for a senior ticket valid for 90 mins, so we would need another for the return journey. It took half an hour to get right into the middle of town by the big lake. This has a fountain in the middle and lovely flower-beds etc so I got out my new camera, took off the lens cover and........nothing!!   My freshly charged battery was still in the MH in the charger!!!!   Oh, was the air was blue?   A bright clear day in Bergen and no photos?!
Luckily I had charged my phone so took a few with that, but the wifi is so weak I can't send attatchments to the laptop!

We liked Bergen very much. It is Norway's 2nd city, but quite small. It is surrounded by 7 mountains (hills?) with a funicular up to one and a cable car up to another.  It was quite cold and windy to begin with but as the sun burnt off the cloud it got quite warm.   We had a look at the fish market, which is mainly aimed at cruise ship passengers ( Japanese and Americans) and is very expensive, selling pre-packed smoked salmon and caviar and lobster etc. You can get fish and chips for about £14!!!
There were stalls selling moose and raindeer sausages, dried to last for months. Also lots of shops with big fair isle type sweaters and expensive leather goods. As you would expect we didn't buy a thing - we can just about afford to eat!

We had a look at the wonky wooden houses on the Bryggen, which were Hanseatic league warehouses. This links previous places we have visited - Lubeck and King's Lynn...
We wandered over to the old castle and tower, which was occupied by the German's during WW2 and partly destroyed when an ammunition ship blew up in the harbour.  There is a park running through the castle grounds and a rough path up to an older fortified area above. We wandered up there and had our coffee and had the place to ourselves.
We also just wandered around the narrow streets looking at the pretty old painted wooden houses. There have been some disastrous fires around here and we were told that this is why it is so hard to get LPG in Norway.   They are sitting on enormous reserves of North Sea Gas but hate using it. Also almost every valley has a hydro electricity generating station.
Really we just enjoyed wandering around in the sun. The statues and flowers are very good.
We caught the Light Railway back and popped into the supermarket at the shopping centre for a few bits. - Skummet melk - 14NOK a litre! Potatoes - 35 NOK per kilo.  A few bits came to 91NOK
We had a quiet evening continuing the Scrabble challenge.
