Non-Travel Day

This morning we headed east on I-80 and then south on CA Rt . 49 to the town of Coloma and the “Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park”. This is the location of “Sutter’s Mill” and the discovery of gold by James Marshall on January 24, 1848. The museum contained relics from the California gold mining period and a film explaining the discovery of gold the formation of
the town. We wandered around the town which had several period buildings, a functioning blacksmith shop and a recreation of the saw mill near which gold was discovered. After a picnic lunch we headed north on CA Rt. 49 to “Nevada City” an old gold mining town where we strolled Main Street of the historic district and did a little shopping.
