Port Hardy

Port Hardy - downtown Discovering Downtown Port Hardy
So today we decided to explore downtown Port Hardy. And we discovered one thing it is a super cute town with a nice park in the town, some nice walks along the ocean…
So this most northern town of Vancouver Island – which is 230 km further north from Campbell River has still 2500 people living in it… even it looks way smaller.

Port Hardy Along the seawall: not this is one nice walk with nice views over the bay and up towards the open ocean, you come along a lot of relaxing benches and flags

Port Hardy - the carrot at point Zero Carrot Park: seriously why would you call a park like this, maybe because there is a huge carrot? But very important this is where the Highway 0 is for the Island Highway – ok the marker is a carrot!!

The carrot story: I think the story behind is cute: it's a carrot because the government promised it forever like dangling a carrot in front of the northern settlers – with the Carrot campaign in the late 1970s, they wanted to make the government finally to complete their promise with a Highway. Yes it is not about rabbits it is about a highway.

Port Hardy - a perfect spot for lunch
Tsulquate Park: you look for a perfect place to relax in the sun – have a picnic with awesome views – see nice wood carved signs, wonderful Indian painting and have a stroll along the tide pools… then come here

And also the harbour, where we saw more fisherman cutting up this time Halibut... you can check out a lot of ships

Port Hardy - we love the bears More bears on the campsite
And like every day we see bears here… so only sitting in the chair overlooking the river and you will see them… or go for a walk along the river and you are maybe lucky and see mom and baby bear.

Port Hardy And Salmon again
And because we bought 3 huge salmon yesterday we are on a salmon diet… we discovered different ways of BBQ and side dishes and we enjoy again some yummy Salomon

Port Hardy - Tex Lyon Trail - a rest point Tex Lyon Trail
No Gine read about that trail going along the coast line: so a trail along the coast line should be with lots of great scenery and nice and levelled and relaxing – right????

So we come to the trail head – park follow the road to the beginning and that’s when you wonder if this is the right walk for you: because you start out walking over logs to the other side at least 5-8 m above ground… but we are brave and go…

Port Hardy - Tex Lyon Trail And so our adventure starts:
  • Ropes to go up
  • Ropes do go down
  • Should we choose the high tide or the low tide trail…? Wince we didn’t know if it’s low tide we choose the high tide trail
  • We saw moss and ferns
  • We had some cool glimpses on the ocean and islands
  • We went up a gorge between huge boulders
  • We went over bridges and up ladders
  • We found a view point with some awesome views
  • We came to another rock out with super views where we enjoyed the view and the sun
  • We went along the ocean on the low tide trail and learned that we had to climb along the rocks over the barnacles
  • We saw funky tree stumps and moos covered trees
  • Walking along the beach you have to go over some water crossings – saw some cute tide pools
And we never made it to the end of the trail… since we didn’t know how much more up and down would be coming.

Port Hardy - we meet the wolves We meet the wolves
On the board of the campground we read that a guy is coming with 2 wolfs, so they are not purebred wolfs, but they are mostly wolf and are grown up with humans. Still looking at them, they never stand still always check around, the eyes always going
We even were allowed to pet them, but only if you are an adult, because they still think that kids are prey….
That was so super cool

And we still haven’t seen everything up north here….
