Mexico celebrates my B'day

San Blas, Nayarit, Mexico

Happy Birthday to me! Not really: not happy about my age continuing to rise, even if I don't feel like I'm aging. And the humidity is too high to be comfortable. But thanks for all the good wishes.
I set out about 8AM to look for a better room. As usual, they are either high end or low end. High end ($40 or more) is out of my budget. Low end can be kind of dumpy. Found a place with AC for $15, and at 9:30 I was moved in.
Tried the internet while I cooled down, but it was very slow and frustrating, like waiting 20 min and it still wouldn't connect, and then when it did it wouldn't upload what I'd typed.

So I took another walk around town, but there isn't much to see around San Blas. Took another (airconditioned) bus ride into the hills, for about 4 hours; not much to se there either, except the mountains. Got back to town; tried to do more blogging: more frustration. Sun's going down. Let's see what we can find for supper.

Went down to the square, and there was a little activity (whereas the previous night there had been practically none). Found this stand selling hamburgers and hot dogs (among Mexican fare), ordered a cheeseburger, and went down to this liquor shop a couple of doors away to get a beer, came back and waited a couple more minutes for my burger. List price on the board was $38 ($2.25USD), a little high, but then they had fries with it, and the guy only charged me $30. September 16 is Mexican Independence Day, and they start celebrating the night before (at least in this town), including discounts on stuff! More and more people were filling up the square. There was a band on the stage. And some guys were setting up a fireworks display.

So I kept walking around, soaking it all up. Went and got a hot dog (no relish - ketchup, mustard and green chile sauce) and a beer.

Must be about 8PM now and people are still coming in. I asked if there would be fireworks. Yup, at about 9 or 10.

Went to an upstairs bar overlooking the square and had a rum and coke ($70/$4).

Went back to walking around the square, took some photos, then went to another upstairs bar had another rum and coke; this one was larger and happy hour ($50/$3), definitely happy hour! Took a couple of pics from up there.
Then I figured it should be close to fireworks time. They went off at about 10:45 (that's okay - no school tomorrow!)

So I went down and worked my way around the crowd to find a good viewing spot. Had one, until this tall guy got in front of me. Didn't know how to set my camera for fireworks (I do now). The top of the tower blew off and went way up in the air, then came down, still burning, and landed in the middle of some people (nobody hurt). The fire went out quickly; no need for the firetruck which was standing nearby.

Went to bed about 11:45, and all was quiet by midnight.
