Troncones - no way

Zihuatanejo, Guerrero, Mexico

Went to where I was supposed to take the bus to Troncones. Asked the first driver I saw and he waved to the street behind me and said three blocks. I go the three blocks, and there are a mess of combis there. Asked a driver, he didn't speak any english so he couldn't give me directions but pointed to another driver who did speak english. He offered me a lift, for free, to where I could get the right bus. It's just two small streets crossing, and the driver told me which corner to stand on. I thanked him. He picked up a fare and moved on.

Less than ten minutes later, two buses show up: the first guy said to get on the one behind him. Good thing I asked the first guy. The guy who gave me a free lift said to listen for the driver to call out 'LaUnion'. When the driver called out, it sounded like 'neeo'! Same thing for the bus from Lázaro to here: got there at 9:50 for a 10:10 departure, and they were loading up a bus; the conductor kept yelling two names, neither of which sounded like 'Zihua' or 'Zihuatanejo'; about 10:05, there's no other bus here yet, so I asked the guy if this were the one, and he says 'si! si! esse, esse!'

We rode around town for about 10 min making pickups, and then down the hwy for about 40 min with a couple stops. The bus never had more than eight people on it; don't know how they can make any money! Cost me $1.50 to go 25k. Got let off, with two other people, at the road to Troncones; there was a combi already waiting. $0.60 and six minutes later (it would probably take an hour to walk it), I'm at the beach.

I have no idea what some of these writers make a fuss about (they must get commissions).

I spent about 50 min walking the beach, about 1k. This entire coast is supposed to be about 12k, divided into several beaches. This is the main one.
As you can see, this beach is definitely not anything to write home about. I was researching room prices yesterday, and I don't think I saw anything under $80. I've seen beaches twice as nice for half the price. And forget about buying anything: there are only those tiny corner grocery stores.

This the main drag.

Waited about 20 min for a combi to pick me up and drop me at the hwy. Waited about another 20 min for the bus to Zihua.

As soon as I got off the bus, I walked over to one of the first restaurants I saw: had a salad and a Corona.

Now I guess I'm taking the afternoon off. Too hot to go to Ixtapa; I'll do that in the morning.

Next stop is Acapulco. Did a little research to make sure I wasn't missing anything along the way. Then I checked on the buses: not posted online, so I went to the bus station, and, as I feared, there are only two evening departures, and it's a six hour run, so you get into Acapulco in the middle of the night. Trying to do this tomorrow. Just have to wait and see how much time I spend in Ixtapa.

Guess I'll get packed so I'll be ready to go. Had chips and coke for supper while watching a movie.
