Playa Zicatela

Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, Mexico

Left just after 6am to check out the Zicatela area (southeastern part of town). Short story is that it's like the rest of the town: neither fancy nor shabby.

Zicatela beach is about 2 mi long and wider than most beaches. The sand is pretty good for most of it.

There's the beach, restaurants (all one story, I think), the street, then the hotels and shops, which climb a hill of about 200 ft. So pretty much everyone gets a view of the beach. There are spaces available for others to build too (remember - relatively small town).

Even though this is supposed to be one of the foremost surfing places in the Americas, it's not that crowded. Look at the pics. Also, even though part of this beach is known as the Mexican Pipeline, I didn't see any large waves (apparently they only occur at different times). The waves do break in different directions, and this moves around a lot! That makes things exciting!
