Zipolite, Pacific Coast, Mexico

Wanted to give the whole picture of this area, usually referred to, and on maps, as Mazunte.

There are actually three areas (and a little more): Mazunte, San Agustinillo, and Zipolite (M-A-Z). I decided to present this as geographically as possible.

This area is almost the southernmost area in Mexico. This is the farthest south I've ever been, and will be until I enter Guatemala.

I started just west of Mazunte, on a hill called Punta Cometa.

You can see it's a bit of a climb.

But worth it for the view. Even the 'mouse' likes the view!

There are a couple of beaches just west of the point: the first one is not so hot; the next one is okay: it's a ways from the road, so no one's done anything with it yet. And there are beaches beyond that aren't even named on a map.

Looking east, you can see (with binoculars) all three of the main beaches.

Mazunte, to me is nothing special: waves are smaller because it's a little more sheltered; it's half the length of the other two; the lodging might be a tad better, but the restaurants aren't.

San Agustinillo (A, for short) has this tiny beach to the west of the point; the main beach goes off to the right (as you look at the pic). The building you see is where I stayed the first night. Behind me is the rocky point you see in the next pic (makes a good sheltered area for kids).

A. has more and better housing and restaurants than the other two. There are equal top-of-the-line hotels and restaurants on each beach. A. just has more, and more variety.

It also has a more interesting beach and prettier waves.

It's 11am, and I've been out since about 7am. Hunger is beginning to gnaw on me, and since the restaurant selection is better here, this is where I decided to eat.

Got a craving for Italian, so I ordered this pasta; came with toasted french bread with melted butter but no garlic - still good. $4.20

I sat in the right rear corner (looking in from the entrance) right over the beach! This is like first class stuff at second and third class prices! No can do this anywhere in the US!

*See the rest of A in the pics below*

Zipolite is divided into three areas: Playa Ventinilla, Playa Zipolite, Playa del Amor.

Playa Ventinilla gets its name from the whole in the rock. It's definitely a nude beach. Although, as you can see, most people wear clothes. It's semi hidden behind a rock wall: there's an open area between the rocks and the hill; or you can walk below the rocks when the tide is low enough.

This end of Zipolite is also populated with nudists.

It has an assortment of housing and a couple of good restaurants.

The center section of the beach is more or less 'hippie housing'.

The last part of the beach is more of a low-rent area, known as Playa del Amor.

White hotel, second floor, just before the 'wall' that sticks out: my room.

Water is good. Just not quite as nice as A.

Finally got a spectacular sunset!
