Looking around Huatulco and Pochutla

San Pedro Pochutla, Oaxaca, Mexico

Left the beach a little after 7am, got to Pochutla a little after 8am, riding one of these pickup trucks tricked out for hauling people as well as stuff. Wasn't that bad a ride even on a wooden bench. $1.

Walked up the street about five blocks, found a hotel, with a/c: wanted $24, I hesitated, they dropped it to $21 (400 pesos to 350 pesos); I took it.

Dropped my stuff. Asked the clerk about a pharmacy and HSBC: she knew exactly where to send me. Got money and drugs (now I'm starting to feel like a real Mexican gangsta!).

Grabbed a slightly oversized van (seats 20 - yes they use a big shoehorn; no they don't!), was in Crucecita a little after 10am. $1.50 Not bad so far: got a room, ran my errands, and back to the beach!

Walked to the beach, which was a lot farther than I thought. First one I came to is Playa Santa Cruz, in Bahia Santa Cruz, which is mainly a marina: includes all the party boats and ferries that take you exploring the coast (minimum cost was $60, just to see one beach). One small beach next to the marina; three other tiny beaches within the bay.

Next stop, about 1 1/2 mi wallk, was Playa Chahué. On the left (from the beach) is a rock pier. To the left of the pier and behind are a couple of small marinas. The beach it self is decent size, about 1/3 mi, but half of it is backed by a hotel which pretty much dominates and occupies that half of the beach.

The next closest beaches are a bit of a hike, so I decided to see if I could find a place to stay to use as an exploration base. The places I'd seen so far were $40 plus. Saw one for $24, but it looked a little dumpy.

Took some pics of the touristy area, which actually is everything within miles of here: see what nice streets they've built courtesy of the Mexican Government! Everything is clean and pretty well maintained (even saw a guy sweeping leaves and dirt out of a drainage canal!) Wish I could get a shot of the entrance to the whole area, but hard to do from a the middle of a van traveling at 60 mph. Lots of boulevards everywhere. In the older part of town (pics later), the streets are all one-way (looks nicer, eases traffic), and there are good street signs on every corner.

Found a room, same price as the one in Pochutla: clean, bright, has everything but a fridge (usually only in a suite, but they actually had some in the rooms at one place in San Agustinillo).

Stopped in here for lunch, about two blocks from my new room. Very good choice; with real parmesan on top (hard cheeses are not common in Mexico). $4.25

Took a couple pics of the area.

Returned to Pochutla.     Took some pics around the hotel.

Went up an alley, which dropped down on the other side, to get this sunset pic.
