Acadia National Park

I woke at 7am, hit snooze a few times, and finally rousted myself to call Acadia Woods Kennel to see if we could get dogs in for daycare.  Great news that although they didn’t have daycare activity with all dogs playing together, they were happy to day board them in outside kennels together and would be let out into play yard every couple hours - sounded great!  Barking together with other dogs should keep them exhausted!  We had to disconnect to drive the 40 miles onto Mt Desert Isle where kennel and Acadia National Park are located.  Dog drop off was great, staff very friendly, Maggie came nose to nose with the resident cat and didn’t kill it so we left the dogs at 10am and continued on to the park, which was only about 8 miles away.  We arrived at Visitor Center and actually found an RV parking spot and left the RV, planning to use Island Shuttle as parking and traffic is extreme.  Forest ranger at VC was very helpful in planning hikes, bike rides, sites to see.  First, we rode shuttle to Sand Beach, crossed the beach to hike Great Head trail - a “Little Rock climbing” the ranger said.  It started off very reasonable, we ate our lunch at 1pm with views of the Atlantic Ocean, and then met the rock climbing challenge - we were coming down the rocks which was a little scarier than if we had been coming up.  But we managed the task with only a couple slips and no serious injuries!  But the walk brought us out at 2pm and we had planned to leave park no later than 4pm to pick up dogs by 5pm.  So we practically ran the Ocean Path to get to Thunder Hole, where water surges into narrow rock opening and blows out like a whale blow.  It’s a better blow 2 hours before high tide or after storms, so it was pretty low surge today.  Now it’s 3:15 and we are needing to catch a shuttle immediately to get back by 4pm - fortunately we caught a shuttle, but after we got on, the bus was full and all other stops did not allow anyone else on the bus.  We got back at 4:10, and made it to kennel by 4:45 - whew!  Didn’t want to make a bad impression so they wouldn’t be invited back!  The views were stunning from the Great Head trail, but we were disappointed to discover that the Island shuttle does not go to top of Cadillac Mountain, a famous lookout point.  I had seen it on a previous visit, but they don’t allow RV’s to top any more and no shuttle buses.  Bummer!  We could hike but we think at least a 2 hour hike up...so much to do!  I would also like to get in to Bar Harbor town, but again parking an issue :(. Stopped at Walmart on the trip back to our Holden KOA site, another 40 miles back, but have made a reservation closer for tomorrow night.  Dinner at 8pm, scouring the literature on campgrounds south of here for another few nights - need to call some places tomorrow.  Tired!
