Searsport Ocean Camping

Searsport, Maine, United States
Took our time this morning at our Woodlands KOA Campground, finally checking out at 10:45 am.  It had rained last night and was foggy this morning, but not raining, so we decided to return to Acadia for a short hike on the carriage trails.  The past few days had shown overcrowded parking at Eagle Lake Carriage entrance, but we decided to try it today since surely there would not be crowds on a rainy day.  We were correct and managed an off road parking spot big enough for the RV, setting off about 11:15.  Our path followed Eagle Lake which had an eery appearance as fog rolled over it, making it seem like we were looking at the ocean.  We wanted to see more of the bridges that Rockefeller had designed himself, so we followed the paths for about 2.5 miles.  Lots of bicyclists, runners, and hikers but no motorized vehicles allowed.  We didn’t see the carriages as they concentrate mostly around Jordan Pond, but it was a pretty, woodland path.  I’m seeing just a few red maple leaves, imagining how beautiful it will be in fall.   It’s hard to believe this system of roads/bridges is nearly 100 years old and still look smoother than the paved city roads.  They say Rockefeller spent over 3 million dollars in the construction of these roadways and bridges as well as put his personal touch on the construction, design and development for 20 years.  I put the story as told by Park Service into my pictures, hope it can be read - it made us appreciate the engineering feat so much more.  The rain started drizzling for our last 30 mins of walking, but turned into heavy rain just when we reached the RV.  We were very lucky to get back in time, but there were still many others on the trails - they are a hearty, outdoors people here in Maine (or from places that come to Maine for vacation - met a couple from North Hills/Pittsburgh today!).  We set out for our new campground, further south on the coast.  Should have been a 1 hour drive, but traffic off Mt Desert Island was lined up for miles - not sure why, not rush hour, visitors leaving due to rain?  So it took us about 2 hours to reach Searsport Shores Camping Resort.  We have 3 nights here, hope to relax, shower (“free showers and hot water, cleaned 3x/day” says the brochure!), launder, and take a couple side trips.  They also advertise a “resident artist” (this month a weaver), live music (tonight all string instruments, “picking” their fiddles, banjos, etc), a seafood sampling (tonight a free basket of mussels), nature trails/gardens, a goat pen, and canine aquarium!   Tomorrow we explore the beach, and Moose Point State Park next door.
