Bar Harbor, Maine, United States
Against our will, we had to be up early to make the 40 mile drive in to Bar Harbor from our last night at the Holden KOA - barely saw the campground, realized we never even walked the dogs there because we were leaving early in am and taking dogs to daycare, so they were exhausted when we got back to camp.  We had worked hard last night to come up with some ideas for where to stay next, so I called our first choice at 8am, hoping I would not have to work down our list of 6 campgrounds.  Great news - Searsport Shores Ocean Camping can take us for 3 nights.  More expensive than I preferred but I compromised by taking a campsite farther from the ocean but still paying about $66/night.  Most of our campsites have averaged about $40’s/night but I wanted a relaxing, pretty view for a few nights because I’m tired of moving!  But for now, we are leaving this campground, and found one closer to Acadia for tonight so we won’t have to drive back 40 miles.  On the road by 9am, but had a sudden detour when I saw the LL Bean outlet store in Ellsworth!  I’ve been to the main Freeport store and their outlet store twice before and never found any great deals, but it is nice to be able to try clothes for fit so in we go.  I must say the prices were excellent - 50-70% off retail, most are returned items, so many backpacks are monogrammed with other names, but I found a nice pair of pants for $12 and a folding rocker camp chair for $45, just in time for my planned ocean viewing relaxation!  Then it was back on the road (dogs tolerated their alone time fairly well, Sara only mild panting) and dropped dogs at Acadia Kennel for a second day.  The staff is wonderful, facility very clean,  and it’s been so convenient to leave them there.  Acadia is actually VERY dog friendly, with dogs allowed on the shuttle buses, lots of dogs hiking with their owners, allowed on the carriage paths, but the shuttle buses are often very full and I would hate to be trying to squeeze the dogs into the tight spaces.  But we saw a lot of large and small dogs in the park and in town so it is a common site to see dogs at restaurant patios.  After dropping the dogs, we drove the RV into Visitor Center parking to leave it for the day - I got the last RV spot at 11:30 am, then we boarded a bus to Bar Harbor Village Green.  We had not seen the town yet, and the road into town is under construction with one way traffic only, so long lines, dirt roads, and lack of parking made me want to avoid driving there.  The plan had been to go back to Acadia (Jordan Pond) after town, but we had a really nice day wandering around town until 3pm.  Now there was not enough time to get to Jordan Pond and back to pick up dogs by 5.  I’ve been to Jordan Pond previously and it is a beautiful pond (lake) with trails around it and a restaurant with lawns of outdoor seating, and famous for their “popovers”.  We also were intrigued by the Carriage Trails built by John D. Rockefeller, Jr as a way to keep motorized vehicles out of the park, and a charming way to see the views of the park.  Apparently, he designed gravelled paths and granite bridges to follow the terrain of the land and encourage viewpoints and 16 bridges which demonstrate “function and art”.  All well and good until I came around a curve in the road, was impressed by a stunning arched bridge ahead, until I glanced at the roadside warning sign that said 12’ clearance, and I’m driving the RV that is about 12’3” tall - if you count the rooftop air conditioner!!!  I couldn’t stop suddenly, so was able to swerve to center of road where I do believe clearance looked much higher, and made it safely under bridge without removing the air conditioning unit!!  But did have nightmares about the collision of granite bridge and my RV!  A quick stop at the kennels to pick up the “girls”, and get some “lobster advice” from Holly - there are lots of lobster pound shacks along the road, meaning steamed lobster, corn on the cob, and blueberry pie dinner.  When asked if all were similar, she said absolutely not, and we needed to go to Rose Eden Lobster Hut.  Fortunately, it was close by, had parking for RV, all outdoor seating conducive to dogs, and supposedly has the best lobster!  We were there by 4:30, trying to beat the dinner rush.  The lobster man took us into the kitchen to choose our lobster from a tank, soft shell vs hard shelled, and choose a side of mussels or clam.  The 2 person meal with soft shelled lobster (about 1.5 lb) was $36.  And, of course, blueberry pie for dessert!  We even had advice and demonstrations from our chefs on how to crack the lobsters.  The mussels were fast and easy, but the lobster was sweet, moist, and delicious!!  Leaving the restaurant, door hinge pops off again - I had to work on it awhile, but it seems to pop off and locks door open every few days - fortunately, I’m getting better at fixing it, just can’t get it to stay permanently!!  After dinner, time to get to our new campground - KOA Bar Harbor Woodlands.  And getting dump duties done before setting up.  I like this campground as the sites are surrounded by trees, but we only enjoyed our wooded lot about an hour before it was dark. So glad we don’t have to be up early tomorrow!
