Launceston, Tasmania, Australia
Time to explore Launceston today and there are several routes around the town. We ought be able to see quite a lot with we follow them and there are said to be a number of really superb architectural styles and beautiful build inns to see.
We set off along the river and through the harbour; a lovely day meant that we could enjoy the scenery and the very stylish apartments at our leisure . Walking on to the area known as the Cataracts we were amazed to find a fantastic gorge with the most stunning rock formations that seemed to be so precariously balanced. Frequent 'photo stops' meant that the walk soon became more of an amble and as a result even more pleasant. Going further into the gorge we could hear the distant lament of the bagpipes, sadly it got louder and more and more off key the nearer we got! Sadly we were glad to move on out of ear shot, as was everyone else!!!
As we walked there was a sudden noise and a young wallaby/kangaroo bounded out of the trees to our right and disappeared left into the undergrowth. Wonder why it is that when you don't have a camera ready something like that happens?! Still it was lovely to see.
Morning tea was taken today in a pleasant little area in the park, sharing a coffee stop with a group of peacocks seemed rather strange but they were quite friendly and inquisitive. It's difficult not to feed them but you mustn't!
The other 'strange' thing was that a small wallaby was sitting on the lawn near the cafe while a group of Asian tourists chased by it trying to photograph the peacock!! Crazy. We got some good shots anyway!!
This afternoon we took the route that runs through the CBD, it was quite busy lots of shoppers preparing for 'back to School' strange that it's the autumn term starting here soon.
There were lots of original buildings here dating from the early nineteenth century through to the twenties, thirties and modern times all seemingly perfectly happy side by side. This is a very attractive town.
