Coles Bay, Tasmania, Australia
On a lovely sunny morning we packed up the car and left Launceston; I think over the last few days we have really seen it at its best.
We have a fairly long journey today as we are going right over to the eastern side of Tasmania to the Freycinet National Park .
It was an interesting route as we passed through some rather nice towns. Our Morning tea stop was in the lovely historic town of Evandale. It was a very pretty place with some really interesting buildings and a really good coffee shop, which did a great line in cakes!!
Travelling on we came to another historic town, Campbell Town. Again there were some interesting buildings and some local history to find out about. There was also an interesting park area with some unusual wood carvings, which proved to be a very pleasant picnic spot for lunch.
The afternoon journey was a route of contrasts, no towns now but looping roads going up through wooded areas then coming back to more open spaces. This was cattle and sheep county.
Further east we came to the wine growing areas, lots of vineyards and adverts for 'open doors' another way of saying they had wine for sale. We stopped at once such place, called 'Devil's Corner' - never found out why, but it had a great look out tower over the vineyard across to the sea. We did a little wine taste but as we are moving on again soon decided not to buy.
Later we stopped at an area called Friendly Beaches and got a lovely view across azure waters and pale sands. Between May and November it is possible to see whales and dolphins as they migrate along the coast. But as it's February they have all gone!!
Finally we arrived at our 'home' for the next few days the Freycinet Lodge. A pleasant cabin for two in the woods, what more do you ask for? It seems very comfortable and relaxed.
Sadly the restaurant was another matter, noisy and with indifferent service; shows what happens when you have a captive audience!!
