Rivière Noire, Rivière Noire, Mauritius
It may only be the third biggest earner after tourism and textiles now but once it was king (or roi ) on the island so as the weather was still affected by the remains of the cyclone we ventured north to the Aventure du Sucre,a sugar mill now turned into a museum. It closed in 1999 but all the equipment remains. A giant aircraft hanger with an enormous crushing mill and vast vats, pipes and boilers. Miranda remembers visiting it once many years ago on a private visit when it was working, very noisy and ,surprise surprise, very sweet. It still has it's little chimney attached to the mill whereas you see quite a few abandoned in the countryside poking out from woodland and the cane. We were able to taste all the different kind of sugars that are made with the cane that surrounds the old mill and another rum sampling. Thankfully another nice on site restaurant helped soak up the generous helpings of the sweet nectar. of course we bought a bottle for sundowners.
Although the rain kept falling intermittently it was no way as bad as before and were able to eat under cover on the terrace with our guests Anjali and Gautam for a jolly curry .
