Halls Gap, Victoria, Australia
Before leaving Robe we had a chance to walk around this little fishing village that has a historic past and many old colonial buildings. Our drive took us through Coonawarra with its iconic wineries including Wynns,Penfolds,Yalumba, katnook and then suddenly we left the rich wine growing area and entered a more parkland environment reminiscent of the UK with sheep, cattle and wheat fields. We stopped for lunch in Horsham at a bakery that holds the the world record for the biggest vanilla slice...this is Australia after all.
Soon we entered the Grampian mountains where a year ago a huge bush fire had destroyed the bush but amazingly it is slowly recovering as is the way with the vegetation here . We walked to the bottom of the Mackenzie falls, the biggest waterfalls in Victoria and the Reed lookout with a fantastic view of the mountain ranges. As we neared our hotel for the night we stopped at the local cricket ground where a mob of kangaroos were happily nibbling the grass impervious to the tourists gawping at them.
