Lindisfarne and Holy Island

Longhoughton, Eastern Valleys, United Kingdom
Drove to Holy Island with Theresa and David, watching out for the tide across the causeway. First a visit to Lindesfarne Castle, small and homely bachelor pad of Edward Hudson, founder of Country Life Magazine, on the headland. He had many interesting visitors, including Alicia Markova, ballet dancer, and Siegfried Sassoon, WW1 poet.

Then Holy Island Priory, seat of the start of Christianity there, with St . Aidan and then St Cuthbert. Looked at St Cuthbert's Isle, where he lived until he went to the Farne Islands. Climbed up coast guard watch tower. Spied hundreds of seals lying on sandbanks in the bay, but too far away to appreciate properly. Tried locally brewed mead.

Then drove to Bamburgh Castle, looked at from outside and walked along the beach.

Back via Seahouses to look at booking a trip to the Farne Islands bird sanctuaries for later this week. Dinner at Craster pub.
