Tulip festival with no tulips!

Ribe, Jutland, Denmark
We had been advised (by a German in Florence weeks ago) to stock up at the last German city before the Danish border, as it is much cheaper. Pulled off the motorway at Flensburg and found the most amazing supermarket. Bulk and smaller quantities of alcohol, frozen goods, and everything else, all superb quality. If you had a Scandinavian passport, it was VAT/GST free. Unfortunately our Swedish visitors' permits were not good enough. Anyway, filled the fridge and freezer, but forget to fill up with fuel!

Drove to Denmark . Crossed to west coast to Denmark's oldest town with the oldest cathedral, Ribe.

Our camp was at a fishing lake, very pretty and peaceful except for the DUB, DUB of the boom box in the distance. The owner of the camp told us there was a big party on in town, a four day tulip festival.

We walked into town. The only tulips we saw were glass ones in a window, but lots of pansies. Looked like a good excuse to party. We even saw one group of young folk in hot tub outside a bar. Lovely old town with crooked cobbled streets, sagging buildings and much Viking history. We went to the Viking Centre, then looked at the cathedral and settled for a drink in the busy square (John still chasing that elusive wonderful dark beer) before doing a walking tour of the older quieter parts of the city. Storks nest yearly on the rooves, as we saw weeks ago in Selcuk in Turkey.

Back to camp ,dinner facing the lake and watched the sun set after 9.30 pm. (we are as far north as Edinburgh)
