What is a SNEK LIFTER??

Keswick, England, United Kingdom
It is a name of a "strong ale" brewed locally in Cumberland. The label says" Be sure to spend your last sixpence wisely!" Also the name of the black metal gadget on each farm door in the cottage that lifts the latch and opens the door!! So now you know.

Despite the appalling weather forecast "rain and possible storms", woke to a lovely day . John had a rest day, doing computer stuff. Theresa, David and I went walking up the nearest valley, past "Catbells" and "Cawsey Pike", along the river, crossed the river and walked down - about 9km of quite stiff walking, sheep and frolicking lambs everywhere, lots of black or grey lambs, (Herdwick sheep) bred for meat so no worries about multicoloured wool. Saw a notice saying that, if your dog annoyed the sheep, it would be shot!

Today's free entertainment involved a 50 seater bus. Obviously not having done his homework, the driver came to collect kids from the Outdoor Activity Centre next door and got stuck- narrow road in front, stone bridge with 3 tonne limit to the right, so had to turn around. Very amusing to watch although Theresa worried he might take out her car or the owner's shed in the process of turning.

Afternoon for retail therapy. Drove to Keswick, local Lakeland town. Every other shop an outdoor clothing/equipment shop as everyone here walks, climbs, kayaks on the lakes or, at the least, strolls with their dogs in all weathers, as it always rains here. Every other person leading a dog! Did some shopping and then home.

Theresa and I did another 2 km walk before dinner. Numerous walks in all directions, all neatly signposted as public walks through farms, over hills and along rivers and streams. Cumbria is beautiful scenery in all directions, overall higher, wilder and steeper than Northumbria.
