Notes on Denmark

Skagen, Jutland, Denmark
We travelled around the lake area, looking at where we could have camped; so many lovely spots. Then went through Silkeborg to Arhus. As the Art Gallery was closed, we went to look at a "prehistoric" museum- also closed! The new museum, not yet open, is very modern, built into the hill and covered with grass. In summer , a museum. In winter, a ski slope (seriously!) We ended up doing a lovely walk, sign-posted all the way, from the museum through beech woods to the beach and back.

Then on to a beautiful camp site on a marina overlooking a fiord . Not up to the views of Milford Sound but very pretty and quiet.

We have noted cyclists in Denmark are very disciplined. There are bike paths everywhere, as it is so flat, even over major intersections, marked in blue. Cyclists all travel on the paths, all stop at all traffic signals, use hand signals at every turn, yet only 20% wear helmets!

Saw a lovely sight today. A lady we assumed to be a day care mother, wheeling a large pram with 3 large babies in it, accompanied by 2 toddlers. 'Mum' and the toddlers all wearing hi-vis vests!! We had seen another similar yesterday, except she had 4 babies in the pram! Day care mums in Aus. stay at home, I think.

Today we drove slowly north, along the fiord and then up the coast, looking at camp sites as we went, then stopped at a beach for a walk - water not too cold. Had to stop for morning tea and our second Danish pastry. Then on to a site when they found stone circles and 700 Viking graves. Excellent museum of the site and Viking life in general. Vikings were not solely rapists and pillagers.

Then on to the tip of Denmark, the Grenen peninsula, where tides from the Skaggerat (west) and Kattegat (east) meet. Lovely walk on the beach to the tip, then camped in the car park there.

Ferry to Norway tomorrow.
