Our first camp fire!

Arhus, Jutland, Denmark
Slow start, scrambled eggs for Sunday brekkie. Drove across country to Kolding. Denmark so far is all flat! We saw several deer in Farmer Bob's field, nibbling the best new shoots of his crop.

Kolding has a most interesting castle, Koldinghus . The building dates originally from 1268, but many fires and other catastrophes had caused several rebuilds. A wonderful royal residence was almost burnt to the ground in 1808, when Spanish soldiers lit a big indoor fire and great hall collapsed into the royal chapel. Denmark was broke, so the castle was left to rot. In the 1980s, a plan was made to rebuild. Rather than recreate what had been, 2 Danish architects planned to repair crumbling walls, enclose outside walls in a new shell and put in 3 floors of walkways and open stairs, creating an award winning unique reconstruction now renowned throughout Europe. The castle houses an enormous collection of old and modern glass and an even greater collection of silver. Also, this month, displays of modern silver as a joint British/Danish venture, that were fantastic to look at. As it had been the seat of government at one time, I am sure our Princess Mary has been there several times.

Next drove to Denmark's Lake District , the only part of the country with few a gentle hills, numerous lakes and apparently great kayaking country, where they have permanent camps set up along the way, and even carry your gear in for you. We thought we would explore one of the camps and found a great spot, not by a lake but on a farm, where we camped by ourselves, and had a campfire - first one since Aus. John cooked fish and veggies while I dodged the smoke, as usual. No urban surf tonight, just horses neighing and dogs barking.
